Pampas grass takes an average time to grow. It takes about 2-4 years to reach full maturity but lasts for over 15 years. It germinates during the spring months and produces “bulbs” within the 1st year. When winter sets in, the plant becomes dormant. It starts to grow again in the following spring.

After one growing season, the center clump begins to die but the plant itself expands with young healthy shoots emerging.

How Can I Get Rid of Pampas Grass?

Pampas grass as we mentioned above must be planted with intent. This is because getting rid of it is not easy. You cannot plant it today; in 6 months, you want to get rid of it. However, if after several years you feel you want to get rid of it, you can do so.

The easiest method is to use a post-emergence herbicide which is highly effective. Any brand can do but the best are those that contain haloxyfop and glyphosate.

Trim all the grass before applying the herbicide. Remember to wear protective clothing like long-sleeved shirts and hard gloves to protect you from cuts. Use a pair of sharp and heavy-duty shears or a good quality cutter to hack the grass down.

Cutting the grass down has 2 benefits:

• Helps you save on herbicide by using less which is better for the environment.  When the grass is cut, it absorbs what it is fed on from the ground up. This means it will increase the absorption of the herbicide.
• To mix your herbicide, follow the instructions on the bottle and ensure you use the right water-chemical ratio.

Larger or older pampas grass will take 2-3 applications before it can properly die. Once the grass dies, you can either leave it to rot or pull it up and dispose of it.

Therefore, this large perennial grass grows exceptionally well on the coastline of California, Central Valley, the Coast Ranges, the Mojave Desert, and the Western Traverse Ranges. Additionally, these plants do well in dunes, marshes, riparian areas, and disturbed areas amongst others. After its introduction to the area of Santa Barbara in California, pampas grass is now widely grown throughout the state.

We were recently asked, can you grow pampas grass in New England? The answer is a big yes, pampas grass can be grown in New England successfully if given the right condition, care, and maintenance it requires. USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 7 are where New England is situated. However, if you plan on growing these perennials in this area, you should keep in mind that the weather condition should be monitored as it does vary substantially in different states during the yearly seasonal changes. This grass is also native to zone 7 to 11 but is known to thrive in cold weather conditions as its abundant growth is evident in zone 6.

How Deep Do Pampas Grass Roots Grow?

When looking at how deep pampas grass roots grow, you may be surprised to learn that these plants actually have dense fibrous roots that grow in a short lateral fashion and spread out. Although the roots can reach a depth of about eleven feet or so, individual pampas grass roots are known to spread out to over 1000 square feet in the area they are planted. In other words, these grasses embody a very large root system and are sometimes considered invasive. To control this, several handy methods can be used.

What Ornamental Grasses Grow in Wet Soil?

Pampas grass will grow well in wet soil. It grows as a wild pest in my area in very wet bogs and streams and wetlands. It does appear that it is a good idea to make a mount of sand on top of wet soil to plant the young clump of pampas grass into. Once its roots get established it seems to be able to suck enough moisture out of the soil that its roots do not drown. In the early stages of growth, the plants appear to need a bit of help.

My personal advice would be to look around in your area and find out what the indigenous wetland grasses are and just grow those. These tend to be adapted to your local area and will feed the local birds and insects that depend on them for survival. In that way, you are helping conserve your unique ecosystem while creating beauty and inviting nature into your garden. Pampas grass does little good for any ecosystem outside Argentina (where it is indigenous) and will give you hay fever and cut you every time you walk past it.

How Wide Does Pampas Grass Grow?

The clumps can get quite large – a few yards across at the base, and the leaves will flop out a further two to three yards in mature chunks. When this happens you often find the middle starts to die. Purple pampas will do everything even more intensely and can produce huge clumps that are very high and very dense.

What Zone Does Pampas Grass Grow in?

It will survive in zone 6b if you cover it, look ok in mid-summer in 7, and thrive above that. I would suggest in zone 6 that you buy a cold-tolerant variety from your local nursery and look at putting it in a large pot that can be brought into a sheltered space for winter. I have seen pampas grass get killed by snow and hard frost. If the ground freezes the overwintering roots will not always make it.

Will pampas grass grow in zone 3?

No. It will not survive the winter. Rather plant it in a big pot and keep it in a shed for the winter. 

How Long Do Pampas Grass Seeds Take to Grow?

This depends. They are sometimes quite difficult to get to sprout, but when they do the seedlings get going very fast if you have water and humidity. I have always found that humidity domes help with ornamental grasses. 

Where Does Purple Pampas Grass Grow?

This grass is an Andean version of pampas grass – it is closely related to the more common pampas that hail from the Pampas of Argentina, but it is even more of a pest. It has big purple tufts, and it reproduces like an evil creature from hell. It grows in all the same zones as normal pampas grass and maybe just a little more temperature tolerant.

Personally, my advice does not to grow this plant. Ever. It will soon probably be an illegal plant in the US and is already banned in much of the rest of the world, meaning that if you do grow it, you will be trying to get rid of it for the next ten years and paying fines and so on. Removing purple pampas grass is a truly miserable job, as it gets much bigger than regular pampas grass, and its roots just keep sending up new plants. I have had my arms cut to shreds trying to get this plant out. It will probably survive a nuclear holocaust – it is that evil.

Well, now we know that pampas grass grows quite fast, and will, depending on where you live, mature in a few years into a dense clump of showy leaves and flowers. It also accentuates your garden and landscape. Ornamental grasses are a great choice for that background look that stands out in your yard.
