It does well in USDA zones 7 to 11 and in well-protected areas.  It does not do well in cold areas unless you grow them in pots and bring them indoors during winter and replant outdoors in spring. This is not possible due to its large size so planting it in the garden is the only possible option.

Pampas grass has both female and male plumes on separate plants.  The females are the most common varieties grown and much fuller with silk-like hair which males lack.

Planting more females is ideal in ensuring you will have more plumes to plant in the future.

These are the best ornamental plants to grow, their care is minimal other than watering, nothing else.

You can also prune them once per year to the ground to allow new growth.  Prune in late winter or early spring to prepare it for another year of flourishing. You can also burn the foliage down instead of pruning without any harm to the plant.

Be sure to wear protective gear when pruning because the plant has sharp foliage.  Wear gloves and a long-sleeved shirt.

You may use fertilizer for new growth but it is not recommended.
